2nd Edition of the Puro Pinche Poetry Newsletter!
Topic: Puro Pinche Poetry News

Welcome to the 2nd Edition of the Puro Pinche Poetry Newsletter!

The Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center (225 E. Stenger St., San Benito) Writers Forum meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. for literary readings. Everyone is welcome. Sign up in person to read or just come check it out.

The Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum hosts literary readings/open mic the first Friday of each month.

Anyone interested in helping to organize (not read) the inaugural Rio Grande Valley International Poetry Festival, scheduled for April 2008, is welcome to an organizational meeting with the founder, Daniel Garcia Ordaz, and other organizers on Monday, Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Blue Onion Restaurant (423 S. International Blvd., Weslaco). For a menu, map, coupon request, etc. visit http://www.myblueonion.com/. For information on the meeting contact Daniel @ (956) 358-7211 or visit Valley International Poetry Festival 2008 www.elzarapepresss.com/vipf.html. (Note, the meeting was announced for McAllen, but they have limited space, so it'll be in Weslaco in the bar section.)

Poetry at CineSol: Organizers of the 14th Annual CineSol Film Festival that will be opening on August 31 – September 2 (Labor Day Weekend) at the South Padre Island Convention Centre are seeking to also include an art show and poetry segment. If you are interested in participating, please call Monica Solomon at 956-454-9846.

The bad ass band, Bombasta, will again take the stage at Cine El Rey on Sept. 1 and they will again invite local poets to take the stage before and during their performance. These guys are incredible. Check www.cineelrey.com for ticket info (956) 971-9829 and www.bombasta.com for info on the band. Their previous Valley concert was to protest the border wall. These guys are awesome: Latino Funk, Reggea, Hip-Hop, Jazz, . . . They Rocked the House! They got horns, congas, accordion, etc. Just awesome! If you're interested in performing with them, contact Lady Mariposa on MySpace.com or find Bombasta's Roberto Ybanez Livar on the band's site online.

McAllen's ArtWalk is about to get underway again on September 7. Many venues welcome poets. Visit http://www.mcallenartwalk.com/ for more info and invite yourself. Like the one in San Antonio, ArtWalk is held the first Friday of the month.

The Edinburg Public Library has invited me to bring a few friends together for a literary reading on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Let me know if you're interested in reading: wegotwords@hotmail.com.

Thanks to all who read with me at the Valley Heat/Valle Caliente art exhibit/poetry reading at Mi Taller! Pottery Studio in Mission. It was hotter than a mo-fo (true to it's name) but it was cool. Artist/Potter/Owner Julian R. Rodriguez plans to have us back again in October for another reading/art exhibit to celebrate the unity of the Texas/Mexico border community. Let me know if you're interested.

Post your comments and your dates, etc. at the Puro Pinche Poetry Newsletter/Blog
www.elzarapepress.com/ppp or e-mail your info to wegotwords@hotmail.com. This newsletter is distributed the first week of each month. If you don't wanna get this info, let me know.

CALL FOR POETS

Julian R. Rodríquez, owner of Mi Taller Pottery Studio in Mission is opening his doors to poets/writers to help end the “Summer Heat Series” he’s been hosting at his place. Next exhibit is July 6 at 7 p.m., but as far as readings go, Julian would like to have readers on August 3 during the “Valley Heat” group exhibition. Julian is a first-class potter.

400 N. Conway Ave., Mission. Doors open at 7 p.m. Readings at 7:30 p.m.

If interested, contact Daniel García Ordaz, at wegotwords@hotmail.com or 956-358-7211. Depending on who signs up we might move over to Jitterz Coffee Bar afterwards for a second reading to make the travel worth it. (About a mile down the road on Conway.)
